Indications

• Early treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores)
• Reduction of likelihood of ulcerative cold sores
• Shortening of lesion healing time
• For adults and children (6 years of age and older)

Pharmacology

• Inhibitory activity against Herpes simplex viruses type 1 and type 2
• Selective affinity for the enzyme thymidine kinase
• Conversion into nucleotide analogues
• Inhibition of viral DNA polymerase
• Incorporation into and termination of the growing viral DNA chain
• Inactivation of the viral DNA polymerase
• Anti-inflammatory effects

Dosage & Administration

• Topical application 5 times per day for 5 days
• Early initiation after first signs and symptoms

Contraindications

• No known contraindication

Side Effects

• Local skin reactions like drying or flaking
• Burning or tingling
• Erythema
• Pigmentation changes
• Application site reactions
• Signs and symptoms of inflammation

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category B
• No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
• Minimal systemic exposure

Precautions & Warnings

• Not to be used in the eye, inside the mouth or nose, or on the genitals
• Seek medical advice if cold sore fails to heal within 2 weeks

Use in Special Populations

• Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric subjects less than 6 years of age
