Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators in late phase
- Peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage form: tablet, teaspoonfuls, injectable
- Dosage for adults, children 6 years and older, children 2-6 years, children 6 months to 2 years, adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older, children 6 to 11 years of age, children 6 months to 5 years of age
- Recommended dosage for intravenous injection
- Not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with specific medications
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect is somnolence
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Drug excreted in human milk
- Caution advised for nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised when driving or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients
