Indications

  • seasonal allergic rhinitis relief
  • perennial allergic rhinitis relief
  • uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria treatment
  • allergen induced asthma treatment

Pharmacology

  • potent H1 receptor antagonist
  • no significant anticholinergic effects
  • no significant antiserotonic effects
  • inhibition of histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
  • reduction of migration of inflammatory cells
  • reduction of release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
  • peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
  • peak blood levels of 0.3 micrograms/ml reached between thirty & sixty minutes
  • plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
  • renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
  • excretion half-life of approximately nine hours

Dosage & Administration

  • adult dosage of 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
  • children (6 years and older) dosage of 1 teaspoonful twice daily
  • children (2-6 years) dosage of 1 teaspoonful once daily
  • children (6 months to 2 years) dosage of 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
  • injectable dosage form for intravenous administration
  • recommended dosage regimen of once every 24 hours for treatment of acute urticaria
  • intravenous injection dosage for adults and adolescents of 10 mg
  • intravenous injection dosage for children 6 to 11 years of 5 mg or 10 mg
  • intravenous injection dosage for children 6 months to 5 years of 2.5 mg

Interaction

No clinically significant drug interactions found with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin

Contraindications

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • caution to be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Use in Special Populations

  • reduced clearance in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
  • safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
  • reduced clearance in elderly patients
