Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Cetirizine Hydrochloride is a potent H1 receptor antagonist
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators
- Peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and Children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily (or 1 teaspoonful twice daily)
- Children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Cetirizine injectable dosage form for different age groups
- Recommended dosage regimen for acute urticaria
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with specified drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect is somnolence

- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Cetirizine excreted in human milk
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution when driving a car or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance and increased AUC in mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients proportionate to decrease in creatinine clearance
