Medicine Details

Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
  • Treatment of allergen induced asthma

Pharmacology

  • Potent H1 receptor antagonist
  • No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
  • Inhibition of histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
  • Reduction in migration of inflammatory cells
  • Reduction in release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
  • Peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration for adults
  • Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
  • Renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
  • Absorption unaffected by food
  • Plasma elimination half-life of approximately 20 hours in dialysis patients

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral dosage form for adults and children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
  • Oral dosage form for children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
  • Oral dosage form for children 6 months to 2 years: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
  • Injectable dosage form for adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older: 10 mg once every 24 hours
  • Injectable dosage form for children 6 to 11 years of age: 5 mg or 10 mg depending on symptom severity once every 24 hours
  • Injectable dosage form for children 6 months to 5 years of age: 2.5 mg once every 24 hours

Interaction

  • No clinically significant drug interactions found with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin

Contraindications

  • History of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine

Side Effects

  • Most common side effect: somnolence

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
  • Cetirizine Hydrochloride excreted in human milk
  • Caution advised for nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution advised when driving a car or operating heavy machinery

Use in Special Populations

  • Reduced clearance in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
  • Plasma levels unaffected by hemodialysis
  • Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
  • Reduced clearance in elderly patients proportional to decrease in creatinine clearance
