Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibition of histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduction in migration of inflammatory cells
- Reduction in release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration for adults
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
- Renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
- Absorption unaffected by food
- Plasma elimination half-life of approximately 20 hours in dialysis patients
Dosage & Administration
- Oral dosage form for adults and children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
- Oral dosage form for children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Oral dosage form for children 6 months to 2 years: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
- Injectable dosage form for adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older: 10 mg once every 24 hours
- Injectable dosage form for children 6 to 11 years of age: 5 mg or 10 mg depending on symptom severity once every 24 hours
- Injectable dosage form for children 6 months to 5 years of age: 2.5 mg once every 24 hours
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions found with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect: somnolence

- Cetirizine Hydrochloride excreted in human milk
- Caution advised for nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised when driving a car or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Plasma levels unaffected by hemodialysis
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients proportional to decrease in creatinine clearance
