Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- Does not cause significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
- Children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Injectable dosage: 5 mg, 10 mg, or 2.5 mg depending on age and severity of symptoms
Interaction
- No clinically significant interactions with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect is somnolence

- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Cetirizine excreted in human milk, caution needed during nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution needed when driving or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance and increased half-life in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Demonstrated safety in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients
