Indications
- Seasonal allergic rhinitis relief

Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic effects
- No significant antiserotonic effects
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells
- Reduces release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentration of 257 mcg/L within one hour (980 mcg/L in children)
- Almost no drowsiness effect
- No behavioral changes
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
- Renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
- Excretion half-life of approximately nine hours
- Consistent absorption from one subject to the next
- Affected by food in terms of rate of absorption
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
- Children (6 years and older) dose: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily, or 1 teaspoonful twice daily
- Children (2-6 years) dose: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Children (6 months to 2 years) dose: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily, 1/2 teaspoonful every 12 hours (12-23 months)
- Cetirizine injectable dosage form for adults and adolescents (12 years of age and older): 10 mg
- Cetirizine injectable dosage form for children (6 to 11 years of age): 5 mg or 10 mg
- Cetirizine injectable dosage form for children (6 months to 5 years of age): 2.5 mg
- Cetirizine is a single use injectable product for intravenous administration
- Not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Theophylline
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Azithromycin
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Pseudoephedrine
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Ketoconazole
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Erythromycin
- No significant interactions with other drugs reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect: somnolence
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy category: B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Cetirizine excreted in human milk
- Caution exercised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution exercised when driving or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Total body clearance of Bptrol reduced in mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- AUC and half-life increased by about 2 to 3 fold in hepatic and renal impairment
- Plasma levels unaffected by hemodialysis
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients (6 months to 5 years)
- Clearance reduced in elderly patients
