Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria and allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- No drowsiness effect
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators in late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentration: 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage forms: oral tablet, injectable
- Different dosages for adults, children 2-6 years, children 6 months to 2 years, adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older, children 6 to 11 years of age, children 6 months to 5 years of age
- Injectable dosage regimen: once every 24 hours for acute urticaria
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin
Contraindications
- Patients with hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Common side effect: somnolence

Use in Special Populations
- Reduction in clearance in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency

- Reduction in clearance in elderly patients
