Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibition of histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduction in migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
- Renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
- Excretion half-life of approximately nine hours
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage form: oral and injectable
- Different dosage recommendations for adults, children 2-6 years, and children 6 months to 2 years
- Injectable dosage regimen based on age and symptom severity
- Intravenous administration for injectable form
- Not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, and other drugs
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect: somnolence

- Caution advised when driving or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance and increased AUC in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients
