Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators in late phase
- Peak plasma concentration of 257 mcg/L within one hour
- Plasma half-life approximately 11 hours
Dosage administration
- Dosage for adults, children 6 years and older, children 2-6 years, and children 6 months to 2 years
- Injectable dosage form for adults, adolescents, and children of different age groups
- Recommended intravenous dosage regimen for acute urticaria
- Not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions found with specific medications
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side effects
- Common side effect: somnolence

- Cetirizine excreted in human milk

- Reduced clearance in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Clearance reduced in elderly patients in proportion to decrease in creatinine clearance
