Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Cetirizine Hydrochloride is a potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduces migration of inflammatory cells
- Reduces release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentrations of 257 mcg/L achieved within one hour of administration
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
- Renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
- Excretion half-life of approximately nine hours
Dosage & Administration
- Cetirizine oral dosage form:
- Adults and Children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily (or 1 teaspoonful twice daily)
- Children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Children 6 months to 2 years: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
- Cetirizine injectable dosage form:
- Recommended dosage regimen is once every 24 hours as needed for treatment of acute urticaria
- Advised for intravenous administration only
- Dosage varies based on age and symptoms severity

No clinically significant drug interactions
Contraindications
- Contradicted in patients with hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Most common side effect is somnolence
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution advised when administered to nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised when driving or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance and increased half-life in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients, in proportion to decrease in creatinine clearance
