Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of the uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria and allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibition of histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduction of migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentration of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
- Consistent absorption from one subject to the next
- Renal clearance of 30 ml/minute
Dosage and Administration
- Different dosage forms for adults, children 2-6 years, and children 6 months to 2 years
- Intravenous dosage form for adults, adolescents, and children 6 months to 11 years
- Recommended dosage for different age groups and symptom severity
- Not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with specific drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine

- Most common side effect is somnolence

- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
