Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen-induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Potent H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Histamine-mediated early phase inhibition
- Reduction of inflammatory cell migration
- Reduction of mediators associated with the late phase of the allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentration of 257 mcg/L achieved within one hour
- Plasma half-life of approximately 11 hours
- Consistent absorption from one subject to the next
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage form: tablet or teaspoonfuls
- Recommended dosage for adults and children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
- Recommended dosage for children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Recommended dosage for children 6 months to 2 years: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
- Recommended dosage for injectable form: once every 24 hours as needed for treatment of acute urticaria
- Administered as an intravenous push over a period of 1 to 2 minutes
- Not recommended in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age with impaired renal or hepatic function
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Theophylline
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Azithromycin
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Pseudoephedrine
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Ketoconazole
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Erythromycin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine
- Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Common side effect: somnolence
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution required when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution required when driving a car or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduction in clearance and increase in AUC and half-life in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduction in clearance in elderly patients
