Indications
- Seasonal and Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting and selective H1-histamine receptor antagonist
- Rapidly absorbed
- Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism
- Converted to the pharmacologically active acid metabolite, carebastine
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet Adult:
- 10 mg (one tablet) once daily
- Tablet Children:
- 5 mg (half tablet) once daily (6-12 years of age)
- Syrup Children:
- 2.5 ml once daily (2-5 years of age, upto 5 ml in severe cases)
- 5 ml once daily (6-12 years of age, upto 10 ml in severe cases)
- Administration:
- May be taken with or without food
Interaction
- Increases in plasma level of Ebanex and prolonged QTc interval when combined with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- No interaction with the pharmacokinetics of theophylline, warfarin, cimetidine, diazepam, or alcohol
- Enhancement of sedation effect of alcohol and diazepam
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ebastine or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, dry mouth, drowsiness
- Less common: abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, insomnia
Overdose Effects
- No clinically meaningful signs or symptoms observed up to 100 mg given once daily
- No specific antidote for Ebanex
- Recommended: gastric lavage, monitoring of vital functions including ECG, symptomatic treatment
