Indications
- Seasonal and Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Ebastine is a long-acting and selective H1-histamine receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of peripheral receptors remains at a constant level after repeated administration
- Rapid absorption and extensive first-pass metabolism following oral administration
- Conversion of ebastine to the pharmacologically active acid metabolite, carebastine
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet dosages for adults and children
- Syrup dosages for children of different age groups
- Guidance on taking ebastine with or without food
Interaction
- Increased plasma level and prolonged QTc interval with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- No interaction with the pharmacokinetics of theophylline, warfarin, cimetidine, diazepam, or alcohol
- Possibility of enhanced sedation effect with alcohol and diazepam
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ebastine or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common side-effects: headache, dry mouth, drowsiness
- Less commonly reported side effects: abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, insomnia
Overdose Effects
- No clinically meaningful signs or symptoms observed up to 100 mg given once daily
- No specific antidote for Ebatrol
- Recommendations for accidental overdoses: gastric lavage, monitoring of vital functions including ECG, and symptomatic treatment
