Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Targets H1 histamine receptor
- Inhibits mast cell and basophil degranulation
- Reduces release of histamine and inflammatory mediators
- Improves symptoms such as pruritus, rhinorrhea, and watery eyes
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 60 mg to 180 mg once or twice daily
- Children 6 to 11 years dosage: 30 mg to 60 mg once or twice daily
- Children 2 to 11 years dosage: 30 mg or 5 ml suspension once or twice daily
- Dosing adjustment for impaired renal function
Interaction
- Increased plasma level when coadministered with erythromycin or ketoconazole
- No interaction with omeprazole
- Reduced bioavailability with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions, insomnia, tachycardia
- Gastrointestinal disorders, rash, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- No human data on effect on fertility
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally/hepatically impaired patients
- Careful administration in special groups
- Association with adverse reactions like tachycardia and palpitations
Use in Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in renal impaired patients
- No significant effect on moderate to severe hepatic disease
- Increased bioavailability in individuals over 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No clinically significant adverse reactions up to 800 mg
