Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis

Pharmacology

  • Responsible for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
  • Binds to and activates H1 receptors
  • Results in the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Prevents activation of H1 receptors
  • Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
  • Does not cross the blood-brain barrier

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
  • Children 6 to 11 years dosage: 30 mg twice daily or 60 mg once daily
  • Children 2 to 11 years suspension dosage: 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
  • Dosage adjustments for impaired renal function

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Increased level with erythromycin or ketoconazole
  • No interaction with omeprazole
  • Reduction in bioavailability with aluminium and magnesium hydroxide containing antacids

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
