Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years of age and over
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years of age and over

Pharmacology

  • Fexofenadine is an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor
  • Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
  • No evidence of carrying antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
  • Does not cross the blood-brain barrier

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults - 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
  • Children (6 to 11 years) - 30 mg twice daily or 60 mg once daily
  • Children (2 to 11 years) - 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may increase fexofenadine level in plasma
  • No interaction with omeprazole observed
  • Antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide may reduce bioavailability if administered 15 minutes prior to Xonad

  • Hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

Precautions & Warnings

  • Limited data for older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
  • Careful administration in special groups
  • Caution in patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease
  • Unlikely to produce significant effects on the ability to drive or use machines
  • Advisable to check individual response before performing complicated tasks

Use in Special Populations

  • Renal impairment alters pharmacokinetics, 60 mg once daily recommended as starting dose
  • Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect pharmacokinetics
  • Adverse events similar in elderly patients but altered pharmacokinetics in individuals over 65 years of age

Overdose Effects

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • No clinically significant adverse reactions reported with doses up to 800 mg
  • Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
  • Haemodialysis does not effectively remove Xonad from blood
