Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and older
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older
Pharmacology
- Responsibility for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Exposure to allergen results in mast cells and basophils degranulation and release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators
- Fexofenadine is considered an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
- Selective affinity for H1 receptors
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for allergic rhinitis
- Children dosage for allergic rhinitis
- Adult dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Children dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole increases fexofenadine levels in plasma
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common side effects: headache, drowsiness, nausea, fatigue
- Uncommon side effects: hypersensitivity reactions, insomnia, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash
- Rare side effects: chest tightness, dyspnoea, paroniria, palpitations, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate data in pregnant women
- No data on the content of human milk after administering Fexofenadine hydrochloride
- Not recommended for mothers breastfeeding their babies
- No human data on the effect of Fexofenadine hydrochloride on fertility
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Administer with care in these special groups
- Patients with cardiovascular disease should be warned of the associated adverse reactions
- Unlikely to produce effects on ability to drive or use machines
- No significant effects on central nervous system function
Use in Special Populations
- Pharmacokinetics altered in individuals with renal impairment
- A dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended in patients with decreased renal function
- Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect the pharmacokinetics
- Similar adverse events in elderly patients compared to those under 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No clinically significant adverse reactions up to 800 mg single dose
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
- Haemodialysis does not effectively remove Fexo from blood
