Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Improvement of health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is considered an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
- Binds to and stabilizes the inactive form of the receptor
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of carrying antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Different dosages for adults and children with allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Recommended dosages for individuals with impaired renal function
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may increase fexofenadine level in plasma
- No interaction with omeprazole observed
- Antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide may reduce bioavailability if taken 15 minutes prior to Fexocon
- Advisable to leave 2 hours between administration of Fexocon and antacids
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Undesirable effects including nervous system disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, and general disorders reported in clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate data from the use of Fexofenadine hydrochloride in pregnant women
- Limited animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects
- Not recommended for mothers breast-feeding their babies
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about potential adverse reactions
- Unlikely to produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines based on pharmacodynamic profile and reported adverse reactions
Use in Special Populations
- Pharmacokinetics of fexofenadine altered in individuals with renal impairment
- Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect the pharmacokinetics
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
- Standard measures recommended to remove unabsorbed medicinal product
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
- Haemodialysis does not effectively remove Fexocon from blood
