Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine binds to and stabilizes the inactive form of the H1 receptor
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
- Children from 6 months to 11 years: 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
Interaction
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole results in 2-3 times increase in fexofenadine level in plasma
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole observed
- Administration of antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels 15 minutes prior to Fexocon causes reduction in bioavailability
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Uncommon: nausea
- Hypersensitivity reactions with manifestations such as angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnoea
- Tachycardia, palpitations
- Diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate data from the use of Fexofenadine hydrochloride in pregnant women
- Fexofenadine should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
- Not recommended for mothers breastfeeding their babies
- No human data on the effect of Fexofenadine on fertility
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned
Use in Special Populations
- Renal impairment: dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended
- Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect the pharmacokinetics of fexofenadine
- Adverse events were similar in elderly patients compared to patients under 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- Single doses up to 800 mg administered to healthy subjects without development of clinically significant adverse reactions
- The maximum tolerated dose of Fexocon has not been established
