Pharmacology

  • Fexofenadine is considered an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
  • No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity

DosageAdministration

  • AllergicRhinitis:
    • Adults&Children(12+):
      • 60 mg twice daily
      • 120 mg once daily
      • 180 mg once daily
      • In case of impaired renal function: 60 mg once daily
    • Children(6-11):
      • 30 mg twice daily
      • 60 mg once daily
      • In case of impaired renal function: 30 mg once daily
  • ChronicIdiopathicUrticaria:
    • Adults&Children(12+):
      • 60 mg twice daily
      • 120 mg once daily
      • 180 mg once daily
      • In case of impaired renal function: 60 mg once daily
    • Children(6 months - 2 years):
      • 15 mg or 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) twice daily
      • In case of impaired renal function: 15 mg or 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) once daily

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Co-administration with erythromycin or ketoconazole leads to increased plasma levels
  • No interaction with omeprazole
  • Administration with antacids should be spaced 2 hours apart

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
