Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Responsible for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Binds to and activates H1 receptors, causing release of pro-inflammatory cytokines
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- 60 mg to 180 mg once or twice daily for adults and children 12 years and older
- 30 mg to 60 mg once or twice daily for children 6 to 11 years
- 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily for children 2 to 11 years
- 15 mg or 2.5 ml to 30 mg or 5 ml for children with impaired renal function
Interaction
- Does not undergo hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole results in increased plasma levels
- No interaction with omeprazole
- Antacid administration 15 minutes prior causes reduction in bioavailability
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

- Nervous system disorders like headache, drowsiness, and dizziness
- Gastrointestinal disorders like nausea
- Immune system disorders like hypersensitivity reactions
- Cardiac disorders like tachycardia and palpitations
- Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders like rash, urticaria, and pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data in pregnant women
- Fexofenadine found in human breast milk
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
- No human data on effect on fertility
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about adverse reactions
- Unlikely to produce effect on ability to drive or use machines
Use in Special Populations
- Alterations in pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect pharmacokinetics
- Adverse events were similar in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects of dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
- No development of clinically significant adverse reactions at administered doses
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
