Medicine Details

Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria

Pharmacology

  • Responsible for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
  • Binds to and activates H1 receptors, causing release of pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
  • Does not cross the blood-brain barrier

Dosage & Administration

  • 60 mg to 180 mg once or twice daily for adults and children 12 years and older
  • 30 mg to 60 mg once or twice daily for children 6 to 11 years
  • 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily for children 2 to 11 years
  • 15 mg or 2.5 ml to 30 mg or 5 ml for children with impaired renal function

Interaction

  • Does not undergo hepatic biotransformation
  • Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole results in increased plasma levels
  • No interaction with omeprazole
  • Antacid administration 15 minutes prior causes reduction in bioavailability

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

  • Gastrointestinal disorders like nausea
  • Immune system disorders like hypersensitivity reactions
  • Cardiac disorders like tachycardia and palpitations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited data in pregnant women
  • Fexofenadine found in human breast milk
  • Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
  • No human data on effect on fertility

Precautions & Warnings

  • Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
  • Patients with ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about adverse reactions
  • Unlikely to produce effect on ability to drive or use machines

Use in Special Populations

  • Alterations in pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
  • Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect pharmacokinetics
  • Adverse events were similar in elderly patients

Overdose Effects

  • Reported effects of dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
  • No development of clinically significant adverse reactions at administered doses
  • Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
