Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- H1 histamine receptor mediation of hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Degranulation of mast cells and basophils
- Release of histamine and inflammatory mediators
- Binding of histamine to H1 receptors
- Stabilization of the inactive form of the H1 receptor by fexofenadine
- Lack of evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- No significant CNS effects due to lack of crossing the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and children 12 years and older
- Different dosage for impaired renal function
- Tablet options: 60 mg, 120 mg, 180 mg
- Suspension options: 30 mg or 5 ml, 15 mg or 2.5 ml, 30 mg or 5 ml (1 tsp)
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Increased level of fexofenadine with coadministration of erythromycin or ketoconazole
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
- Reduction in bioavailability with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine hydrochloride or its ingredients
