Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria

Pharmacology

  • H1 histamine receptor mediation of hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
  • Degranulation of mast cells and basophils
  • Release of histamine and inflammatory mediators
  • Binding of histamine to H1 receptors
  • Stabilization of the inactive form of the H1 receptor by fexofenadine
  • Lack of evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
  • No significant CNS effects due to lack of crossing the blood-brain barrier

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dosage for adults and children 12 years and older
  • Different dosage for impaired renal function
  • Tablet options: 60 mg, 120 mg, 180 mg
  • Suspension options: 30 mg or 5 ml, 15 mg or 2.5 ml, 30 mg or 5 ml (1 tsp)

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Increased level of fexofenadine with coadministration of erythromycin or ketoconazole
  • No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
  • Reduction in bioavailability with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine hydrochloride or its ingredients
