Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Acts as an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor
- Prevents activation and downstream effects of histamine binding
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier

Interactions
- No significant interaction with omeprazole
- Aluminium and magnesium hydroxide antacids reduce bioavailability if taken 15 minutes prior to Fexona
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole can increase fexofenadine plasma levels 2-3 times without significant adverse effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
SideEffects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnoea, flushing, and systemic anaphylaxis
- Cardiac disorders: tachycardia, palpitations
- Gastrointestinal disorders: diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
PregnancyAndLactation
- Not recommended unless clearly necessary
- Fexofenadine may cross into human breast milk
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with cardiovascular disease should be warned of potential adverse reactions
- Unlikely to produce significant effects on the ability to drive or use machines
UseInSpecialPopulations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- Adverse events similar in elderly patients but altered pharmacokinetics in those over 65 years of age
OverdoseEffects
- Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
- Single doses up to 800 mg and doses up to 690 mg twice daily for 1 month have been administered without significant adverse reactions compared to placebo
