Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and over
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity in allergic rhinitis patients
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older

Pharmacology
- H1 histamine receptor mediates hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Fexofenadine is an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor
- Prevents activation and downstream effects of H1 receptors
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily (allergic rhinitis)
- Children from 6 to 11 years: 30 mg twice daily or 60 mg once daily (allergic rhinitis)
- Children from 2 to 11 years: 30 mg or 5 ml suspension twice daily (allergic rhinitis)
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily (chronic idiopathic urticaria)
- Children from 6 to 11 years: 30 mg twice daily or 60 mg once daily (chronic idiopathic urticaria)
- Children from 6 months to less than 2 years: 15 mg or 2.5 ml suspension twice daily (chronic idiopathic urticaria)
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation, no interaction through hepatic mechanisms
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole results in 2-3 times increase in fexofenadine level
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
- Antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels 15 minutes prior causes a reduction in bioavailability
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions (angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnoea, flushing, systemic anaphylaxis)
- Insomnia, nervousness, tachycardia, palpitations, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited animal studies do not indicate harmful effects in pregnancy
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
- No human data on effect on fertility, no data on content of human milk after administration
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Administer with care in special groups
- Warn patients with cardiovascular disease about adverse reactions
- Unlikely to produce effect on ability to drive or use machines
Use in Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- Dose adjustment recommended for patients with decreased renal function
- No substantial effect on pharmacokinetics in moderate to severe hepatic disease
Overdose Effects
- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
