Description

  • Antihistamine for allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria
  • Blocks histamine during allergic reactions
  • Relieves symptoms such as runny nose, itching eyes/nose, sneezing, hives, and itching

Dosage

  • 60 mg twice daily
  • 120 mg once daily
  • 180 mg once daily

Age Group

  • Adults
  • Children 12 years and older
  • Children 6 to 11 years
  • Children 6 months to less than 2 years

Renal Function Dosage

  • In case of impaired renal function: 60 mg once daily
  • 30 mg once daily
  • 15 mg once daily

Administration

  • Tablet

Pharmacology

  • H1 histamine receptor antagonist
  • Blocks allergen-induced release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators
  • Prevents activation of H1 receptors and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors

Mode of Action

  • Binds to and stabilizes the inactive form of the H1 receptor
  • Prevents activation and downstream effects of histamine binding

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Increases in plasma level with erythromycin or ketoconazole coadministration
  • No interaction with omeprazole
  • Reduction in bioavailability with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide
  • Advisable to leave 2 hours between administration and antacids

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

  • Altered pharmacokinetics in renal impairment
  • Increased bioavailability in individuals over 65 years of age

  • No established maximum tolerated dose
  • Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
  • Haemodialysis does not effectively remove Ritch from blood
