Indications
- perennial allergic rhinitis
- seasonal allergic rhinitis
- chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride
- active (Levo) isomer of cetirizine
- nonsedating antihistamine
- potent antiallergic properties
- higher affinity for H1 receptors
- rapid and long-acting action
Dosage & Administration
- 5 mg once daily for adults and children 12 years and older
- 2.5 mg once daily for children 6 to 11 years of age
- 1.25 mg once daily for children 6 months to 5 years of age
- pediatric use based on extrapolation of efficacy from adults
- no sufficient data for geriatric use
- no dosage adjustment for hepatic impairment
- dose adjustment for different levels of renal impairment
Interaction
- no known interactions with other drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine, or hydroxyzine
- severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance: <10 ml/min)
Side Effects
- well tolerated
- rarely reported side effects: headache, dry mouth, fatigue, skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- not recommended for nursing mothers
