Indications
- Perennial allergic rhinitis
- Seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Contains Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride
- Levocetirizine is the active (Levo) isomer of cetirizine
- Well-tolerated nonsedating antihistamine with potent antiallergic properties
- Two-fold higher affinity for H1 receptors than cetirizine
- Rapid and long-acting action allowing once-a-day administration
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended adult dose is 5 mg once daily
- Recommended children 6 to 11 years of age dose is 2.5 mg (½ tablet or 1 teaspoon oral solution) once daily
- Recommended children 6 months to 5 years of age dose is 1.25 mg (½ teaspoon oral solution) once daily
- Recommended pediatric dose for the treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria in patients 6 months to 17 years of age is based on extrapolation of efficacy from adults 18 years of age and older
- Inadequate data for geriatric use
- No dosage adjustment required in patients with solely hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment dosage: 2.5 mg once daily for mild, once every other day for moderate, twice weekly for severe, not recommended for end-stage renal disease or patients undergoing hemodialysis
Interaction
- Not known to have any interactions with other drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine or its parent compound hydroxyzine
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance: <10 ml/min)
Side Effects
- Well tolerated, some reported side effects include headache, dry mouth, fatigue, and skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excreted in breast milk, not recommended for use by nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Epileptic patients and patients at risk of convulsions
- Renal impairment
- Pregnancy and lactation
Overdose Effects
- No clinically relevant adverse events reported in case of overdose
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended in the event of overdosage
