Indications

Pharmacology

Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride is the active (Levo) isomer of cetirizine. It has a two-fold higher affinity for H1 receptors than cetirizine and a rapid and long-acting action.

Dosage & Administration

Adult and children 12 years of age and older: 5 mg once daily
Children 6 to 11 years of age: 2.5 mg (½ tablet or 1 teaspoon oral solution) once daily
Children 6 months to 5 years of age: 1.25 mg (½ teaspoon oral solution) once daily
Pediatric use: Based on extrapolation of efficacy from adults
Geriatric use: Not enough data for patients aged 65 years and older
Hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustment required
Renal impairment:
- Mild renal impairment (creatinine clearance: 50-80 ml/min): 2.5 mg once daily
- Moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance: 30-50 ml/min): 2.5 mg once every other day
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance: 10-30 ml/min): 2.5 mg twice weekly
- End-stage renal disease patients: should not receive Levocetirizine

Not known to have any interactions with other drugs

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Severe renal impairment

Side Effects

Rarely reported: headache, dry mouth, fatigue, skin rash

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Not recommended for nursing mothers.

Overdose Effects

No clinically relevant adverse events reported. Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended in case of overdose.
