Indications
- perennial allergic rhinitis
- seasonal allergic rhinitis
- chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride
- Potent antiallergic properties
- Nonsedating antihistamine
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and children 12 years and older is 5 mg once daily
- Recommended dose for children 6 to 11 years of age is 2.5 mg once daily
- Recommended dose for children 6 months to 5 years of age is 1.25 mg once daily
- Dose for pediatric use based on efficacy extrapolation from adults
- No dosage adjustment for patients with solely hepatic impairment
- Dosage adjustments for different levels of renal impairment
- No specific dosage for geriatric use
Interaction
- Not known to have interactions with other drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine or hydroxyzine
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance: <10 ml/min)
Side Effects
- Well tolerated with rare side effects like headache, dry mouth, fatigue, and skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Not recommended for use by nursing mothers due to excretion in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Patients with epilepsy or at risk of convulsions
- Patients with renal impairment
- Pregnant and lactating women
Overdose Effects
- No clinically relevant adverse events reported in case of overdose
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended in case of overdosage
