Indications
- Perennial allergic rhinitis
- Seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Contains Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride
- Levocetirizine is the active (Levo) isomer of cetirizine
- Highly effective nonsedating antihistamine
- Potent antiallergic properties
- Two-fold higher affinity for H1 receptors than cetirizine
- Rapid and long-acting action
Dosage & Administration
- Adult and children 12 years of age and older: 5 mg once daily
- Children 6 to 11 years of age: 2.5 mg once daily
- Children 6 months to 5 years of age: 1.25 mg once daily
- Pediatric use based on extrapolation of efficacy from adults
- No dosage adjustment for solely hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment: different doses based on creatinine clearance levels
- Geriatric use not sufficiently studied
- Not recommended for severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease patients
Interaction
- No known interactions with other drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine or its parent compound hydroxyzine
- Not for patients with severe renal impairment
Side Effects
- Well tolerated with rare reports of side effects such as headache, dry mouth, fatigue, and skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Not recommended for use by nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Patients with epilepsy or at risk of convulsions should take precaution
- Patients with renal impairment should use with caution
- Precaution during pregnancy and lactation
Overdose Effects
- No clinically relevant adverse events reported in case of overdose
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended in the event of overdosage
