Indications
- Fast relief from symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Effective relief from symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis
- Alleviates symptoms of skin allergies including chronic urticaria
- Effective for relieving symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing and nasal discharge
- Indicated for idiopathic urticaria
- Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis and allergic skin conditions in children
Pharmacology
- Preparation of Loratadine
- Non-sedative histamine H1 receptor antagonist
- Antiallergic properties
- Long-acting tricyclic antihistamine
- Selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonistic activity
- Rapidly effective and long-lasting
- Allows once-a-day administration
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children over 12 years: One Loratadine tablet once daily
- Children 2-12 years: Dosage based on body weight
- Not recommended for use below 2 years of age
Interaction
- No reports of potentially hazardous interactions with other drugs
- No potentiating effects when administered concurrently with alcohol
- Concomitant therapy with specific drugs may elevate plasma concentrations and result in adverse effects
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity or idiosyncrasy to its components
Side Effects
- Comparable incidence of adverse events to placebo during controlled clinical studies
- Comparable effect on driving performance and cognitive functioning to placebo
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not advisable during pregnancy due to lack of experience in human pregnancy
- Excreted in breast milk in a very small amount, nursing mothers advised not to take the drug
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with liver impairment or renal insufficiency (eGFR <30 ml/min)
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects in adults and children with overdose greater than 10 mg
- Prompt symptomatic and supportive measures recommended in case of overdosage
