Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Desloratadine is a non-sedating tricyclic histamine antagonist
- Desloratadine has selective H1-receptor histamine antagonist activity
- Desloratadine inhibits histamine release from human mast cell
Dosage & Administration
- Pediatric drops dosage for child 6-11 months of age: 2 ml drops once daily
- Pediatric drops dosage for child 1-2 years of age: 2.5 ml drops once daily
- Syrup dosage for child 6-11 months of age: 2 ml once daily
- Syrup dosage for child 1-5 years of age: 2.5 ml once daily
- Syrup dosage for child 6-11 years of age: 5 ml once daily
- Syrup dosage for adults & >12 years of age: 10 ml once daily
- Tablet dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and over: 1 tablet daily
Interaction
- No clinically relevant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to medication or its ingredients
Side Effects
- Less common side effects include: headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, pharyngitis, dyspepsia, myalgia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Safe use during pregnancy not established
- Desloratadine passes into breast milk
- Decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or medication
Precautions & Warnings
- Recommended starting dose for adult patients with liver or renal impairment: one 5 mg tablet every other day
