Selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase
Used to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) and triglycerides levels
Indicated for heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, dysbetalipoproteinaemia, coronary artery disease
Absorption within 1 to 2 hours after oral administration
Metabolized by cytochrome P450 3A4
Dosage may vary from 10 to 80 mg once daily, depending on condition and age
Potential drug interactions with antacid, colestipol, digoxin, erythromycin, oral contraceptives, warfarin
Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation
Liver function tests required before and during treatment
Higher plasma concentrations observed in elderly subjects
