Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes the platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of degranulation of mast cells
- Inhibition of release of cytokines like TNF alpha
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents is 10 mg once a day
- May be taken with or without food
- Recommended dose for children aged 2 to 11 years: 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) for children weighing 25 kg or more, 1/2 teaspoonful (2.5 ml) for children weighing equal or more than 10 kg to less than 25 kg
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure when administered concomitantly with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution with concomitant use with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Grapefruit and Grapefruit juice should not be taken simultaneously with Rupatadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, cough, diarrhea
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless potential benefit outweighs potential risk
- Not recommended during lactation unless potential benefits for the mother justify the potential risk to the infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients (65 years and older)
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in elderly
- Neither safety nor efficacy established in patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Symptomatic treatment together with the required supportive measures should be given
