Indications
Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis and Urticaria
Pharmacology
Long-acting, non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors; antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF); inhibits degranulation of mast cells; inhibits release of cytokines
Dosage & Administration
10 mg dose for adults and adolescents; different doses for children based on weight; can be taken with or without food
Interaction
Increased systemic exposure when administered with ketoconazole or erythromycin; caution with statins, CNS depressants, alcohol, and grapefruit products
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or excipients
Side Effects
- Common: asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, etc.
- Rare: palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation due to lack of clinical data
Precautions & Warnings
Caution in patients with prolonged QT interval, hypokalemia, proarrhythmic conditions, and elderly patients; not recommended for patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
Caution in elderly patients and absence of established safety and efficacy in patients less than 12 years of age or with renal/hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Somnolence is most common adverse reaction; symptomatic treatment and supportive measures if accidental ingestion of high doses occurs
