Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative H1-receptor antagonist
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits bronchoconstriction and vascular permeability
- Inhibits mast cell degranulation
- Inhibits release of cytokines
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescent: 10 mg once a day
- Can be taken with or without food
- Recommended dose for children weighing 25 kg or more: 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) once daily
- Recommended dose for children weighing 10 kg to less than 25 kg: 1/2 teaspoonful (2.5 ml) once daily
Interaction
- Concomitant administration with ketoconazole or erythromycin increases systemic exposure
- Caution with concomitant use of statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should not be taken simultaneously
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat, epistaxis, fever
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless benefits outweigh potential risks
- Not recommended during lactation unless benefits justify potential risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Use with caution in patients with uncorrected hypokalemia, clinically significant bradycardia, or acute myocardial ischemia
- Use with caution in elderly patients (65 years and older)
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in use for elderly patients
- Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 12 years old
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: Somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment with required supportive measures
