Indications
- Relief of nasal congestion
- Relief of runny nose
- Relief of sneezing
- Relief of itchy, watery eyes
- Relief of itching of the nose or throat
- Relief of swelling of nasal passages
- Relief of sinus congestion and pressure
Pharmacology
- Non-sedative histamine H1-receptor antagonist
- Long-acting tricyclic anti-histamine
- Selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonistic activity
- Orally active sympathomimetic amine
- Decongestant action on the nasal mucosa
- Nasal and bronchial decongestant activity
- Alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor agonist
Dosage
- Dosage for adults and children over 12 years
- Lower initial dose for patients with renal insufficiency
- Not recommended for patients with difficulty swallowing tablets
Administration
- Administered in patients 12 years of age and older
Interaction
- Contraindicated in patients taking MAO inhibitors
- May reduce antihypertensive effects of beta-adrenergic blocking agents
- May increase plasma concentration of Loratadine and Decarboethoxyloratadine when administered with Erythromycin, Ketoconazole, or Cimetidine
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common side effects like dry mouth, somnolence, insomnia, pharyngitis, dizziness, coughing, fatigue, nausea, nervousness, anorexia, dysmenorrheal, headache
- Less common side effects like increased sweating, thirst, back pain, chest pain, malaise, palpitations, hypertension, tachycardia, abdominal distension, altered taste, flatulence, myalgia, dry throat, agitation, micturation frequency
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- Not recommended for lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid in patients with hepatic insufficiency
- Used with caution in patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, or renal impairment
- Patients with renal insufficiency should be given a lower initial dose
Overdose Effects
- Institute general symptomatic and supportive measures in the event of overdosage
- Treatment may consist of emesis (ipecac syrup), activated charcoal administration, or gastric lavage
