Indications

  • Treatment of topical bacterial infections
  • Effective in atopic, contact stasis and infections, eczematoid dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema, anogenital pruritus
  • Useful as an adjunct in certain pyodermas such as impetigo, during specific systemic antibiotic therapy

Pharmacology

  • Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Active against many gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative species
  • Neomycin binds to the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and disrupting DNA synthesis
  • Active against many gram negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci

Dosage & Administration

  • Ointment: Apply two to three times daily to the affected skin area
  • Dusting Powder: A light dusting of the powder to be applied to the affected skin area up to 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs
  • Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect with other aminoglycosides, enhanced toxicity with potent diuretics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any of its components

Side Effects

  • Mebalon is usually well tolerated
  • In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • The safe use of this preparation during pregnancy & lactation has not been established
  • Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not to be used on large open wounds or severely injured skin
  • Avoid use in otitis externa with perforated eardrum due to risk of ototoxicity
  • Consult a physician for deep wounds, animal bites, or serious burns
  • Discontinue and consult a physician if the condition persists or worsens

Use in Special Populations

  • Suitable for use in children at the same dose as adults
  • Dose should be reduced in infants
  • Not recommended for use in neonates
