Indications
- Treatment of topical bacterial infections
- Effective in atopic, contact stasis and infections, eczematoid dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema, anogenital pruritus
- Adjunct in certain pyodermas such as impetigo
- May be used during specific systemic antibiotic therapy for infections
Pharmacology
- Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Active against gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative species
- Neomycin binds to the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and disrupting DNA synthesis
- Active against gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci
Dosage & Administration
- Ointment for application 2-3 times daily
- Application after gentle cleaning of affected area
- Dusting powder for superficial skin infections
- Light dusting applied up to 4 times daily
Interaction
- Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with other nephrotoxic drugs, may enhance the action of neuromuscular-blocking agents
- Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect with other aminoglycosides, enhanced toxicity with potent diuretics, impaired absorption of other drugs, enhanced effect of acarbose, non-depolarising muscle relaxants, antagonized effect of neostigmine and pyridostigmine, increased risk of hypocalcaemia, alteration of INR, inactivation of oral typhoid vaccine

- Hypersensitivity to any of its components

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe use not established during pregnancy & lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Not to be used on large open wounds or severely injured skin
- Avoid use on areas exuding large volumes of fluid
- Not for treatment of otitis external with perforated eardrum
- Consult physician for deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns
- Discontinue and consult physician if condition persists or worsens
- Not for use longer than 1 week without physician's direction
Use in Special Populations
- Suitable for use in children at adult dose, dose should be reduced in infants
- Not recommended for use in neonates
