NSB (5 mg+500 IU)/gm (Ointment)

Indications

• Treatment of topical bacterial infections
• Effective in atopic, contact, stasis, and eczematoid dermatitis
• Useful as an adjunct in certain pyodermas like impetigo

Pharmacology

• Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
• Active against gram-positive bacteria
• Neomycin binds to the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis

Dosage & Administration

• Ointment application: 2-3 times daily on affected skin area
• Dusting Powder application: Up to 4 times daily on affected skin area

Interaction

• Bacitracin Zinc: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs
• Neomycin Sulphate: Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect with other aminoglycosides

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any of its components

Side Effects

• Usually well-tolerated
• Rare cases of allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safe use not established during pregnancy & lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid use on large open wounds or severely injured skin
• Avoid use on areas exuding large volumes of fluid
• Not for use for otitis external with perforated eardrum
• Consult physician for deep wounds, animal bites, or serious burns
• Discontinue use and consult physician if condition persists or worsens

Use in Special Populations

• Suitable for use in children at the same dose as adults
• Dose should be reduced in infants
• Not recommended for neonates
