Indications
- Topical prophylaxis against bacterial colonization and infection in burn wounds
- Topical antibacterial management of contaminated or infection-prone wounds
Pharmacology
- Antibacterial action of Silver Sulfadiazine

- Weakening of the cell wall membrane
- Reduction in viability of sensitive strains
- Binding of silver moiety to bacterial cells
- Prevention of bacterial cell proliferation
- Bacteriostatic action against sensitive organisms
- Absorption and excretion in adults and children
Dosage & Administration
- Cleansing of burn wounds
- Application of Silver Sulfadiazine over burn wounds
- Thickness and frequency of application
- Use of dressings if necessary
- Reapplication after hydrotherapy
- Continued treatment until healing or grafting
- Withdrawal in case of adverse reactions
Interaction
- Inactivation of enzymatic debriding agents
- Potentiation of oral hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin
- Possible increase in leukopenia with cimetidine co-administration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Silver Sulfadiazine or other ingredients
- Use on pregnant women approaching or at term
- Use on premature or newborn infants during the first 2 months of life
