Indications
- Topical prophylaxis against bacterial colonization and infection in burn wounds
- Topical antibacterial management of contaminated or infection-prone wounds
Pharmacology
- Silver Sulfadiazine's antibacterial action mechanism
- Structural changes in bacterial cell membrane
- Weakening of cell wall membrane
- Reduction in viability of sensitive strains
- Dissociation of silver sulfadiazine molecule
- Binding of silver moiety to bacterial cells
- Prevention of bacterial cell proliferation by silver moiety
- Bacteriostatic action of sulfadiazine moiety
- Approximately 10% absorption in adults
- 60-85% excretion in urine
- 31.8 mg/L urinary sulfadiazine concentration in children with 13% body surface area burns
Dosage & Administration
- Cleansing of burn wounds before application
- Application to thickness of 1/16 inches or 1.5 mm
- Reapplication after patient activity or removal
- Use of dressings if necessary
- Reapplication after hydrotherapy
- Continued treatment until healing or grafting readiness
- No withdrawal from therapeutic regimen in case of infection possibility
- Do not use on pregnant women, premature infants, or newborns within first 2 months of life
Interaction
- Inactivation of enzymatic debriding agents
- Potentiation of oral hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin
- Increased incidence of leukopenia with cimetidine co-administration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or its ingredients
- Use on pregnant women approaching or at term
- Use on premature infants
- Use on newborn infants during the first 2 months of life

- Careful renal function monitoring and sulfa crystal check in urine
