Indications

- Antibacterial management of contaminated or infection-prone wounds
Pharmacology
- Bacterial cell membrane distortion and enlargement
- Weakening of the cell wall membrane
- Reduction in viability of sensitive strains
- Silver sulfadiazine molecule dissociation
- Binding of silver moiety to bacterial cells
- Attachment of silver moiety to bacterial DNA
- Prevention of bacterial cell proliferation
- Bacteriostatic action of sulfadiazine moiety
- Absorption and excretion in adults
- Urinary sulfadiazine concentration in children
Dosage & Administration
- Cleansing of burn wounds
- Application of Silver Sulfadiazine over the burn wound
- Covering burn areas with Silver Sulfadiazine
- Application once to twice daily
- Recommended thickness of application
- Reapplication as necessary
- Use of dressings if needed
- Continued treatment until satisfactory healing
- Immediate reapplication after hydrotherapy
- Precautions for withdrawal from therapeutic regimen
Interaction
- Inactivation of enzymatic debriding agents
- Potentiation of oral hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin action
- Recommended blood level monitoring for hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin
- Increased incidence of leukopenia with co-administration of Cimetidine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or its ingredients
- Use on pregnant women approaching or at term
- Use on premature infants
- Use on newborn infants during the first 2 months of life
