Indications for Use
- Treatment of fungal keratitis due to filamentous fungi
- Treatment of fungal keratitis due to Candida species
Pharmacology
- Clotrimazole kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes
- Works by stopping the production of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes
- Increases membrane permeability and leakage of essential constituents of fungal cells
Dosage & Administration
- Eye ointment should be applied thinly and evenly to the conjunctival sac
- Application every 4 hours daily or as advised by a physician
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals sensitive to its components
Side Effects
- Patients may experience burning or irritation immediately after applying the ointment
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women during the first trimester
- Use only if clearly indicated during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Unknown excretion in human milk, caution when used by a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinue treatment if irritation or sensitivity develops with the use of Fungizol ointment
