Indications
- Treatment of fungal infections of the ear
Description
- Broad-spectrum antifungal agent
- Used for dermal infections caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur
- Inhibits ergosterol synthesis
- Has antibacterial activity
Pharmacology
- Kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes
- Stops the production of ergosterol
- Increases membrane permeability
- Leads to leakage of essential constituents of the fungal cells
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 2-3 drops in the affected ear two or three times daily
- Treatment should be continued for at least two weeks after the disappearance of all signs of infection
Interaction
- Reports of a heat reaction when used concomitantly with Sofradex drops in the ear
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of its components
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated after local application
- Reported side effects: erythema, stinging, edema, pruritus, general irritation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Recommended during pregnancy only after consulting a doctor
- Marginal systemic absorption following topical application, so minimal risk during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Consider withdrawal if local intolerance develops
- Not intended for ophthalmic use
Overdose Effects
- Supportive measures in case of accidental oral ingestion
