Description
- Broad-spectrum antifungal agent
- Used for dermal infections
- Active against various species of pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, moulds, and bacteroids
- Active against certain gram-positive bacteria
- Alters permeability of fungal cell walls
- Inhibits ergosterol synthesis
- Causes membrane damage unrelated to sterol synthesis
- Shows other pharmacological effects
Pharmacology
- Damages the permeability barrier in the cell membrane of fungi
- Causes inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis
- Essential constituent of fungal cell membranes
- Inhibits lanosterol 14-demethylase (CYP51)
- Depletes intracellular calcium
- Blocks calcium-dependent potassium channels and voltage-dependent calcium channels
Dosage & Administration
- Thinly applied 2-3 times daily to infected sites
- Small amount usually sufficient for an area about the size of the palm
- Duration of treatment varies based on factors such as extent and localization of the disease
- Recommended duration for different conditions
- Preventative treatment for fungal infection of the feet
- Odorless and does not stain clothing
