Indications
- Treatment of dermatomycoses due to dermatophytes (e.g. Trichophyton species)
- Treatment of dermatomycoses due to yeasts (Candida species)
- Treatment of dermatomycoses due to moulds and other fungi
- Treatment of skin diseases showing superinfections with these fungi
- Treatment of interdigital mycoses (e.g. athlete's foot)
- Treatment of paronychias associated with nail mycoses
- Treatment of mycoses in skin folds
- Treatment of Candida vulvitis
- Treatment of Candida balanitis
- Treatment of Pityriasis versicolor
- Treatment of erythrasma
Description
- Broad-spectrum antifungal agent
- Treatment of dermal infections caused by pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, moulds, and bacteroids
- Active against certain gram-positive bacteria especially Staphylococci and Tricomonas
- Alters the permeability of fungal cell walls
- Interferes with cell wall lipids
- Inhibition of ergosterol synthesis
- Additional mechanism of membrane damage unrelated to sterol synthesis
Pharmacology
- Damages the permeability barrier in the cell membrane of fungi
- Causes inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis
- Inhibits lanosterol 14-demethylase (CYP51)
- Depletes intracellular calcium
- Blocks calcium‐dependent potassium channels and voltage‐dependent calcium channels
Dosage & Administration
- Thinly applied 2-3 times daily to the infected sites and rubbed in
- Small amount of cream usually sufficient for an area about the size of the palm
- Recommended duration of treatment for dermatomycoses: 3-4 weeks
- Recommended duration of treatment for Candida vulvitis and Candida balanitis: 1-2 weeks
- Recommended duration of treatment for erythrasma and Pityriasis Versicolor: 3 weeks (approximately)
- Clotrimazole Cream is odorless, can be washed off and does not stain clothing
- Clotrimazole topical solution should be applied sparingly to the affected areas and rubbed in gently, two or three times daily

Side Effects
- Well tolerated when applied topically
- Systemic effects are not observed with external application
- Local irritation or burning sensation may occur in very few cases
