Indications

• Treatment of scabies and crab lice infestations
• Suitable for the whole family

Pharmacology

• Contains Permethrin, a pyrethroid
• Acts on the nerve cell membrane
• Interrupts sodium channel current
• Causes delayed repolarization and paralysis of pests

Pharmacokinetics

• Topical route of administration
• Limited systemic exposure or kinetics following permethrin application
• Presystemic metabolism occurs in the skin
• Less than 0.5% absorbed in the first 48 hours
• Rapid metabolism by ester hydrolysis
• Products excreted primarily in the urine

Dosage

• Different dosages for adults and children
• Recommended duration of treatment for different age groups

Administration

• Skin should be clean, cool, and dry before application
• Specific application instructions for adults, children over 2 years, and babies under 2 years
• Cream should be left on for at least 8 hours before washing off
• Reapplication after 7 days if necessary

Interaction

• Withholding corticosteroids for eczematous reactions prior to treatment

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any component of pyrethroids or permethrin
• Use of gloves for nursing staff
• Risk of irritation to the hands

Side Effects

• Skin discomfort like burning, stinging, or tingling
• Transient signs and symptoms of irritation including erythema, edema, eczema, rash, and pruritus

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Use in pregnancy should only follow medical advice
• Not recommended for nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Potential exacerbation of pruritus, edema, and erythema
• Instructions to avoid eye contact during application and to flush with water if cream gets in the eyes
